Reclaiming Rest and Renewal: The Gift of a Me-Day

For as long as I can remember, my schedule has been packed—work, school, community commitments, and everything in between. It felt like there was no time to slow down, let alone carve out space just for me. Then one day, I realized I was pouring from an empty cup. I couldn’t recall the last time I felt truly refreshed.
That’s when I knew something had to change.
Enter the “Me-Day”—a sacred space in my routine dedicated entirely to self-care. For me, it’s about more than pampering; it’s a time to pause, honor my well-being, and prepare my heart for the sabbath.
What Is a Me-Day?
A Me-Day is an intentional day set aside for rest, renewal, and reconnection with yourself. For me, it’s every other Friday. On these Fridays, I schedule appointments like hair care, nails, facials, or a massage—simple acts that nurture my mind, body, and spirit. But a Me-Day isn’t just about ticking off a list of self-care activities. It’s about slowing down, letting go of the rush, and embracing the beauty of tending to yourself.
Why Self-Care Is Sacred
In Genesis, we see the Creator resting on the seventh day and declaring it holy. If God modeled the importance of rest, why do we resist it so much in our own lives? I’ve come to see self-care as an act of stewardship. When we care for ourselves—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—we are honoring the gift of life and health God has given us. A Me-Day is my way of saying, “Thank you, Lord, for this body and this life. I will cherish and care for it.”
How to Start Your Own Me-Day
Creating a Me-Day doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few tips to make it simple and meaningful:
Choose a Day: Pick a day that aligns with your schedule and feels sacred to you. For me, Fridays are perfect—they set the tone for the weekend and help me ease into a sabbath mindset.
Plan Your Activities: Think about what nourishes you. Whether it’s a hair appointment, a long walk, a good book, or simply an afternoon nap, let your Me-Day reflect your needs.
Protect the Time: Treat this day as non-negotiable. Say no to unnecessary distractions and give yourself full permission to rest.
Reflect and Reset: Use the time to journal, pray, or meditate. Let it be a moment of gratitude and grounding.
My Vision for Fridays
Every other Friday, I now schedule my Me-Day. It might include:
A morning hair appointment to feel refreshed and confident.
A mid-afternoon facial or massage for relaxation.
Quiet time with a cup of tea, journaling, or reading Scripture to reset my spirit.
This simple routine helps me transition from a week of work and school into a space of peace and renewal. It’s become a way of preparing my heart for the sabbath while prioritizing the care I need to show up fully for others.
An Invitation to Rest
Rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s a gift we often leave unopened, waiting for “the right time.” But the truth is, there will never be a perfect moment. The time to care for yourself is now.
I invite you to reflect on your own rhythms and ask: Where can you create space for a Me-Day? How can you honor your need for rest and renewal? Because when you take time to nurture yourself, you’re not just caring for your body—you’re caring for your soul.
